about

I woke from a dream of loss, powerful, with a haunting melody teasingly out of reach as I regained consciousness. In the dream people used the word 'yelleck' - it was spelled out. I thought of young lives snuffed out early. Nick Drake, artist, singer, sometime friend; Rachel Corrie, defiant, brave, principled, killed during Israeli seizures of Palestinian lands.

lyrics

Yelleck

Yelleck yelleck I heard it in a dream
Yelleck yelleck what we are and what we seem
It was with me when I woke and the tune kept on and on
A haunting melody, a farewell song

Yeleck yelleck it’s hard when people leave
Yelleck yelleck do we celebrate or greave
I heard this word of mourning as my morning conquered sleep
Some memories you lose, but some you keep

In his case
If songs were lines in a conversation he said the situation would be fine
But solid air kept us from your side and none knew how to help you
Though many, many many people tried
So I ask
What’s a short life worth when diamonds leave their sparkle long after the jeweller is gone
Here’s what I think
He left too early, but the spirit soars for ever cause he left us the lines from his song

Yeleck yelleck it’s hard when people leave
Yelleck yelleck do we celebrate or greave
I heard this word of mourning as my morning conquered sleep
Some memories you lose, but some you keep

Yelleck yelleck there it is again
Yelleck yelleck like a ghostly sad refrain
Like a bird call in the evening, like a soft sigh on the breeze
Like a journey we have taken rolling seas

And I think
If peace was a perfume you could bottle would it sell or would it wither in the fire of hate
You wonder what’s the point of trying to say reason when a deafness shields the magic, and then it is too late
And I say
The beauty of her sacrifice should never be forgotten, though the land where memory’s hallowed lied and lied
Believe me
She had the courage to stand there to face the danger and they killed but her spirit never died

Yelleck yelleck there it is again
Yelleck yelleck like a ghostly sad refrain
Like a bird call in the evening, like a soft sigh on the breeze
Like a journey we have taken rolling seas

Yelleck yelleck I can’t forget that dream
Yelleck yelleck what we are and what we seem
I do not want to leave you but I have not loved enough
The early days were easy, but the end is tough
The days were easy, the end is tough
The days. The end
The early days
